It’s British Pie Week from 6th-12th March 2017, and who doesn’t love pie? Whether it’s topped with a buttery puff pastry, or melt in the mouth short crust pastry, filled with cinnamon spiced apple or traditional steak and ale, there’s few things better than tucking into a warm, hearty plate of pie. The word “pie” is said to be derived from “magpie”, as these birds collect a variety of things, and early pies were known to contain a variety of ingredients.
Around £1billion is spent on pies every year in Britain, of which pork pies contribute £145million.
A survey of 2,000 Brits in 2016 revealed that apple pie is Britain’s favourite pie.
The Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire won the Guinness World Record for most expensive meat pie ever sold – eight guests enjoyed the pie for £8,195, or £1,024 a slice, on November 14, 2005.
The term "as American as apple pie" traces back to 14th century England, when the Pilgrims brought their pie-making skills and apple seeds to America. As the popularity of apple pie spread throughout the nation, the phrase grew to symbolize American prosperity.
Research by a top pastry manufacturer revealed that 75% of Brits enjoy at least one pie a month, and one in nine indulge in the savoury staple on a weekly basis.
British Pie Week began in 2007 and is a weeklong celebration of pies, this year running from 6th-12th March.
