York is a city with a rich history and an exciting future. With many hidden treasures and lots of independent businesses, it’s easy to get stuck on what to do first. Our luxury hotel is sharing some of the best things to do for your York bucket list.

Scare yourself on a night-time ghost tour

As charming and quaint as York appears now, our city has a bit of a spooky history. Dare to wander the city in the dark, visiting the city’s most haunted pub and the sites of many gory stories. Your trusted guide will protect you from the ghosts and ghouls, but you’ll never see York in the same way again…

Meander along the city walls

One of York’s most famous tourist attractions, you can’t visit without going for a stroll on the city walls. York has more miles of intact walls left than any other place in England. With great views over the city, they’re a wonderful vantage point to spot any hidden shops, bars or restaurants that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Visit a proper Yorkshire pub for a pint

You can’t visit Yorkshire without going for a proper pint in a local pub! Our county has lots of excellent breweries, and many of their beers are stocked in our city. Choose from our huge variety of pubs to nip into for a refreshment, perfect for a quick break from exploring our bustling city. There’s nothing better than a bit of Yorkshire hospitality.

Count how many cat statues you can spy around the city

It’s a bit of an unknown fact that York has lots of cat statues hiding around the city. Easily unnoticed and hiding in plain sight, once you start seeing them you can’t stop! Count how many you can spot around the city, or pick up a leaflet from the York Cat Trail store. It’s a great, free activity for an hour or so of fun.

All hands on deck! You and up to seven of your friends can captain and steer your very own boat with City Cruises York. After a short introduction, you can head out on the river for a whole hour. It’s an amazing way to spend a sunny afternoon, and an even better photo opportunity.

Try one of everything at Shambles Market

Shambles food court has way too many delicious food spots to choose from, so don’t choose! Share a small plate from each of the vendors, and split it between a couple of you so that you don’t have to compromise. Street food favourites can be found every day of the week, with vendors changing so there’s always something new.

Chat to a Viking at Jorvik Viking Centre

How many people can say they’ve spoken to a Viking? Jorvik Viking Centre is an incredibly interesting attraction, with a few different sites and activities. Suitable for all ages, it’s an amazing look back in time, perfect for history buffs. If you need any more convincing, they won Attraction of the Year 2022 at the Visit York Tourism Awards.

See the Heart of Yorkshire in the Minster

When you take a peek inside York Minster, be sure to look up to the Great West Window to see the magnificent Heart of Yorkshire.
