Summer Staycation in York

Festivals & Events

York plays hosts to many vibrant events and festivals and this summer is no exception. Until 2nd September, York is host to the Shakespeare Rose Theatre, where four of Shakespeare’s plays iconic are being performed. If theatre’s not your thing you can still soak up the lively atmosphere at Shakespeare’s Village (free entry) where you can experience Elizabethan entertainment and Yorkshire food and drink.

The Great Yorkshire Fringe, now in its third year, will see Parliament street transformed with white picket fences and pop-up tents from the 19 – 29th July.  Comedy, cabaret, music and family entertainment can all be seen during the 10-day event.

York Minster will also be celebrating this summer following the Great East window transformation with Summer in the Park: Heart of Yorkshire festival taking place from the 4th July – 2nd September in Dean Gardens. SOL AST Tipi will be providing food and drink and there’ll be many activities as well as a Stone Carving Festival and Cinema in the Park throughout this two-month long festival.

The return of the annual Soapbox Challenge come to the cobbled street of Micklegate on 27th August, which provides much entertainment in the city.

For culture, see the sights at the museums dotted around the city. York Castle Museum is a favourite of many locals and from 13 July the museum will be home to Vivienne Westwood’s prized personal shoe collection – an exciting exhibition for anyone who loves shoes.

For fantastic views across the city, take a walk up the mound to Clifford’s Tower or if you’re feeling energetic, brave the 275 steps to York Minsters Central Tower – the highest point in York. After that grab an ice-cream and walk the medieval City Wall. For a more chilled-out summer day hire a self-drive red boat, or if you’re prepared to be spooked then York offers plenty of Ghost Tours or jump onboard The Ghost Bus Tour.

 

Foodies Galore

Food and drink is awash in York and you won’t be hard beat to find somewhere, the only difficult decision is deciding where to go. If you really want to get a taste of what’s on offer, then embark on a food crawl with Tours in a Dish who will show you the many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

If you’re looking for a fancier dining experience then Le Cochon Aveugle, Ambiente Tapas and Skosh receive rave reviews although booking in advance is highly recommended.

To quench your thirst head to one of the many independent venues dotted around the city. House of Trembling Madness, the Viking inspired bar Valhalla, Fossgate Social and Hop win over both locals and tourists alike. Don’t forget all the pubs, there’s one for every day of the year.

We proudly stand in the historic neighbourhood of Walmgate, just a short walk from all the city has to offer.

At one point Walmgate had 20 pubs on the street, today it is a cool mix of independent restaurants, bars and shops and continues to Fossgate – which boasts even more independent shops, delis, bars and restaurants. Walmgate Bar proudly stands at the end of the road. It is the only existing bar in York with a Barbican and forms part of the York City Walls walk.
