The Best Vegan Hangouts in York

It’s nearly that time of year when thousands of people across the UK pledge to try Veganism throughout the month of January – more commonly known as Veganuary.

York is home to some of the best plant-based hangouts, which are loved by dedicated vegans far and wide. In this blog, our boutique York hotel explores some of the very best (in our opinion).

Humpit – Hummus & Pita Bar

Hummus lover? Humpit is THE place to be. After not being able to find anywhere to eat the chickpea-based dish in traditional style, the owners decided to set up their own street market stall. As people started to fall in love with the food, the business grew and now has locations in Sheffield, Leeds and York (just around the corner from the Minster). We recommend trying the falafel with hummus for an explosion of flavour!

True Story

An independent, family-run vegan café in the heart of York, True Story is committed to creating nutritious and delicious plant-based dishes, made from organic produce. Aside from the food, the business often holds comedy and open mic nights, so you can enjoy your food with a side of entertainment. If you’ve got room for dessert (who doesn’t) definitely try their gooey vegan brownies!

Goji Café

A quirky little café, deli and takeaway within the city walls of York on Goodramgate, Goji Café is the perfect place for a bite to eat. Despite being a vegetarian café, much of the food they serve is dairy-free and suitable for vegans. Every day Chef Wendy cooks up an array of delicious comfort food, light bites and mouth-watering cakes! We’ve heard great things about their spicy cauliflower wings and banana, blueberry and almond loaf.

We proudly stand in the historic neighbourhood of Walmgate, just a short walk from all the city has to offer.

At one point Walmgate had 20 pubs on the street, today it is a cool mix of independent restaurants, bars and shops and continues to Fossgate – which boasts even more independent shops, delis, bars and restaurants. Walmgate Bar proudly stands at the end of the road. It is the only existing bar in York with a Barbican and forms part of the York City Walls walk.
