Top 5 summer attractions in York

We love York in every season, but especially in summer! Home to some of the best attractions in the UK, York has so many stories to tell, with a history which dates all the way back to the Romans (when the city was founded). Aside from its rich history, the picturesque city is a sight to behold, with beautiful views which can be seen from the City Walls or on a River Cruise.

To give you an idea of things to do, our boutique hotel in York has put together a guide to the top 5 summer attractions in York.

Shakespeare Rose Theatre

To be, or not to be: that is the question. Shakespeare Rose Theatre is back! Following its an extremely successful inaugural season in 2018, Europe’s first pop-up theatre returns to York with four of Shakespeare’s most popular plays; Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night. The attraction won big at the 2019 Visit York Tourism Awards taking home the crown for ‘Newcomer of the Year’ and ‘Innovation in Tourism’ – very well deserved if you ask us!Shakespeare Rose Theatre[photo credit: Tales of a Backpacker]

York River Cruise

One of the best ways to see York is by foot (in our opinion), but if you fancy something a little different, and want to save yourself some leg work, we’d highly recommend hopping on a River Cruise! You’ll be able to sail past the iconic medieval landmarks and get snap some fantastic photos too. Winner of ‘Visitor Attraction of the Year’, City Cruises York offers a unique experience, you can even enjoy a bite to eat if you book the ‘dinner cruise’ package.

Clifford’s Tower

Start your York adventure at one of the city’s best-loved landmarks, Clifford's Tower! The largest remaining part of York Castle, the 11th-century tower has an impressive history, originally constructed by William The Conqueror, burned down in 1190 and later used as a prison (we know!). From the top, you can see stunning panoramic views across Old York!

York City Walls

The BEST way to see York is with a walk around the City Walls. Not far from our boutique York hotel, the ancient walls which are around 3.5 kilometres long, offer some of the best views of iconic attractions such as York Minster. If you’re an inspiring or avid photographer, the City Walls provide a fantastic opportunity to get some incredible snaps. Fun fact, around 2.5 million people walk along the walls each year!

York Museum Gardens

Head to York Museum Gardens when the weather is fine, and don’t forget to pack a picnic! The botanic gardens can be found in the stunning surroundings of St Mary’s Abbey, just a short walk from our York hotel, and provide the perfect place to relax with friends and family! Best of all, it’s completely free, so you don’t have to spend a penny to have a fantastic day out.

We proudly stand in the historic neighbourhood of Walmgate, just a short walk from all the city has to offer.

At one point Walmgate had 20 pubs on the street, today it is a cool mix of independent restaurants, bars and shops and continues to Fossgate – which boasts even more independent shops, delis, bars and restaurants. Walmgate Bar proudly stands at the end of the road. It is the only existing bar in York with a Barbican and forms part of the York City Walls walk.
