Why you NEED to book a staycation in York

Now then, there’s plenty of reasons to stay in many cities over the UK, but we know where you really need to go…York.

Our hotel in York has totted up some of the top reasons why you NEED to visit York this year. Take a look, and see if we can entice you back through our doors.

We have the weirdest names for things

From streets to ancient landmarks, York is a quirky place with even quirkier names. The shortest street in York is named Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate. Take a ‘long’ walk through Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, and through the city walls, to happen upon the dreaded cell of nightmares named Bitchdaughter Tower. Can’t say we didn’t warn you!

The Shambles

Europe’s oldest shopping street is right here. Known as The Shambles, their legendary weekly markets are all the rage among tourists and locals alike, where you can find some of York’s finest independent businesses and support the local community. In fact, The Shambles is so old, some of the buildings date as far back as 1350!

The city was voted one of the happiest places to live

Yorkshire folk are renowned to be some of the most friendly people in the UK. Known as God’s own city, York is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and the city was recently named as one of the happiest places to live! Just a few reasons why you should have a goosey-gander around our city.

York City Walls

An iconic landmark in York is the historic city walls. For the best panoramic views of our city, the walk along the city walls is best observed early in the morning. Believe it or not, the walls are so old, they date back to 71 AD! Enjoyed by many locals and tourists alike, a morning walk with a cup of coffee is a breath-taking start to your day.

Spooktacular Ghost Walks

Our city is full of spooky tales, and fans of the supernatural won’t want to miss the chance to take a haunted walk! The Original Ghost Walk of York, The Bloody Tour of York & The Shadows of York are all award-winning performances that lead you through the haunted snickelways of our city in the dead of night.

 The UK’s Chocolate Capital

Everyone’s favourite sweet treat can be found in every corner of York. From the York Chocolate Story Museum, York Cocoa House Chocolate Emporium, to York Cocoa Works. Even our boutique York hotel pays homage with chocolate-inspired rooms! See if you can spot something that points to our decadent history in your rooms.

Plant-based lovers will be delighted to know Tempt York has a range of plant-based artisan chocolate up for grabs too – there’s something sweet for everyone in the UK’s chocolate capital!

If these reasons aren’t enough to entice you back to our York hotel, we bet our exclusive offers will!

We proudly stand in the historic neighbourhood of Walmgate, just a short walk from all the city has to offer.

At one point Walmgate had 20 pubs on the street, today it is a cool mix of independent restaurants, bars and shops and continues to Fossgate – which boasts even more independent shops, delis, bars and restaurants. Walmgate Bar proudly stands at the end of the road. It is the only existing bar in York with a Barbican and forms part of the York City Walls walk.
