York’s hidden bars

Psst…come closer, we want to let you into a secret! Some of the best bars in York aren’t well known, they’re actually…hidden! So, if they’re hidden, where do you find them?! Well, our boutique hotel in York is about to reveal it all, so read on as we explore York’s hidden bars!

House of Trembling Madness

If you fancy trying somewhere a little quirky for your next pint, then head to House of Trembling Madness  – just 10-minutes from our York hotel.  Starting life in 1180AD as part of a Norman house, this bar really has stood the test of time! With an array of beers to choose from, you won’t be stuck for choice. There is a real unusual vibe here, with medieval decor, rustic interiors, and not to mention the walls, which are filled with taxidermy! We highly recommend a visit here, even if it’s just for a quick pitstop.

The Habit

Easily mistaken for another quirky York coffee shop, The Habit is just a casual 10-minute stroll from our hotel in York. What was once a home for stone makers, apprentices and priests, it’s now a buzzy city bar serving up unique beers, with a side of live music! Plus, the cherry on the cake has to be the outdoor terrace, with unbelievable views of York Minster.  Head here on a Wednesday for open mic night, or pop along to one of the other music nights; they have a list of regular artists who play.

We proudly stand in the historic neighbourhood of Walmgate, just a short walk from all the city has to offer.

At one point Walmgate had 20 pubs on the street, today it is a cool mix of independent restaurants, bars and shops and continues to Fossgate – which boasts even more independent shops, delis, bars and restaurants. Walmgate Bar proudly stands at the end of the road. It is the only existing bar in York with a Barbican and forms part of the York City Walls walk.
